One of the easiest ways to make more space in your garden or allotment is to grow as many vegetables that are suitable vertically.

A maybe less obvious vegetables to try are winter squash and outdoor cucumbers. Both would quite happily grow scrambling across your bed (or path, let’s face it ????) taking up lots of space. On a wet summer this might lead to an earlier onset of mildew on the leaves though, so what about growing up instead?

There are lots of benefits:
- increased airflow around the plants, less disease
- reduction in the overall footprint of the plant (space!)
- it looks spectacular!

Some things to think about though:
- the support needs to be sturdy! Especially for winter squash. Partly for the weight but also to withstand summer storms. This arch has worked very well for me, drop me a ???? in the comment if you want the how-to!
- maybe go for the smaller varieties of winter squash the first year
- although I grew this large Viktor squash vertically and it was fine, you can support them with an old fruit netting like a hammock ????
- as the plant won’t be able to send down roots along the vine, like it does when it scrambles along the ground, you might need to be more vigilant with the watering
- you will need to help it along up by tying it loosely or twist the vine around the support

Overhauling your plot plan like this, by incorporating vertical growing and similar space saving ideas is something I can help you with in my new Plot Audits ✨

Come together with me for a 30min intensive (or longer) over Zoom to discuss where you’re currently feeling stuck with your veg plot. I’ll lend you my eyes and ideas to help you with what YOU need to see the best way to improve your veg plot and move forward for next season.

You should leave our chat with a clearer idea of how to go about making your garden/allotment do what you want in terms of growing veggies ????
