When we started gardening, we struggled with not knowing what soil mix to use when it comes to potting up seedlings. Many times, we tried several mixes and eventually landed a good one.
IF YOU’RE NOT SURE WHAT SOIL MIX TO USE FOR YOUR SEEDLINGS, THIS MIGHT HELP YOU.
We decided to test four types of soil mixes. From basic compost to professional store-bought mix.
MIX #1
- 2-parts coco coir
- 1-part worm castings
(collected from vermicompost or use finished compost from your garden as substitute)
MIX #2
- 2-parts coco coir
- 1-part worm castings
(collected from vermicompost or use finished compost from your garden as substitute)
- Plus, fish bone meal, blood meal, gypsum, glacial rock dust, and perlite.
We added nutrients to this mix to test if seedlings will grow bigger and faster with tons of nutrients.
MIX #3
PRO MIX which contains, perlite, sphagnum peat moss, limestone, mycorrhizae, compost gypsum, organic fertilizer, coir
MIX #4
- 1-part basic potting soil
- 1-part worm castings
(collected from vermicompost or use finished compost from your garden as substitute)
Lastly, we wanted to test the cheapest option by using basic potting soil and pairing it with homemade finished compost.
THE RESULT:
Worm castings for the win! This shows the value of composting food scraps and turning it into black gold. Though some of the plans grew bigger, we liked the consistency when it came to growing different varieties.
NOTE: When you pot up again, the plants will be bigger and will require that additional nutrient so double up on worm castings/compost or add other necessary nutrients.
