There are many different methods of grafting mango trees, but the most common method is called cleft grafting. To cleft graft a mango tree, you will need the following materials:
A sharp knife or grafting saw
Grafting tape or plastic wrap
or a plastic bag
Instructions:
Prepare the rootstock. Choose a healthy, one- or two-year-old mango seedling. The rootstock should be about the same thickness as the scion you will be using.
Prepare the scion. The scion is the piece of the tree that will be grafted onto the rootstock. Choose a healthy, vigorous branch from a mature mango tree. The scion should be about 6 inches long and have at least three buds.
Make the cuts. Make a sloping cut on the rootstock, about 1 inch long. Make a similar cut on the scion, but make it slightly longer. The cuts should be made so that the cambium layers of the rootstock and scion are aligned.
Insert the scion. Insert the scion into the rootstock, making sure that the cambium layers are in contact.
Tape the graft. Use grafting tape or plastic wrap to secure the scion to the rootstock.
Water the graft. Water the graft well and keep it moist.
Protect the graft. Protect the graft from the sun and wind. You can use a piece of cardboard or a plastic bag to cover the graft.
The graft should take about 2-3 weeks to heal. Once the graft has healed, you can remove the tape or plastic wrap.
